Home Care in New London, CT for Seniors and the Relatives Who Care for Them

Families in New London have two ways to get help at home through Ebenezer AFL. A relative or friend who already lives with an older loved one can be paid for that care through Adult Family Living. When nobody in the household can take it on, one of our trained caregivers can step in. Either way, the services are non-medical, and the first consultation is free.

When a Relative Becomes the Caregiver

Adult Family Living, sometimes called Adult Foster Care, lets the person who knows your loved one best be the one paid to look after them. That caregiver can be an adult child, another relative, or a friend. A spouse is not eligible.

Each caregiver must:

  • Be at least 18
  • Be legally allowed to work in the United States
  • Be capable of providing care
  • Live in the same home as the client

On the client's side, AFL generally serves people 65 and older who have or qualify for Medicaid, need daily hands-on care and supervision, and live in a safe, suitable home.

Our team handles the application for services from start to finish and gets the caregiver credentialed. After that, the caregiver receives a weekly tax-free stipend. Clients under 65 can ask about the PCA Waiver. Families who aren't enrolled in Medicaid yet can get our help with that step too. Details are on the Adult Family Living page.

When You Need an Outside Caregiver

If your family can't provide daily care, Ebenezer caregivers can. Our non-medical home care in Connecticut includes:

  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility
  • Daily tasks: meal preparation, medication reminders, and light housekeeping
  • Support: companionship, dementia and Alzheimer's support, and escorts to appointments

Hours flex to fit the client. Care can be a short daily visit or 24-hour live-in care.

Veterans and Their Families

Honorably discharged veterans in the New London area may receive in-home care through our Veterans Care Services. The program also covers spouses and surviving spouses of veterans. Caregivers help with bathing, dressing, grooming, meals, and mobility. Our staff can explain how home care fits alongside programs like Aid and Attendance. When asked, they also help document care needs for benefit applications.

What Families Can Expect From Us

Every engagement starts with a conversation about the client's routines, concerns, and goals. From there we build a customized care plan and review it regularly as conditions or family schedules change. We match each client with a compatible caregiver so the person coming through the door is someone they know.

Caregivers are carefully screened and background checked. They are CPR and First Aid certified where applicable, and trained in hands-on care, safety, and specialized care needs. Family caregivers in AFL have support of their own: coaching, helpful resources, emotional support, and respite when they need time away.

Care Across New London and Neighboring Towns

Ebenezer AFL is based in Stratford and Shelton and provides care across Connecticut. In the New London area, that includes families in Groton, Waterford, Montville, and Ledyard. We speak Spanish as well as English, so Spanish-speaking clients and caregivers can go through every step in the language they're most comfortable with. Common Questions in New London

  • Can a friend be the paid caregiver?

Yes. Adult Family Living is open to a friend or trusted individual, not only relatives. The friend must be 18 or older, legally allowed to work in the United States, and living in the same home as the client.

  • My husband needs care. Can I be paid as his caregiver?

Not through Adult Family Living, because spouses are excluded as paid caregivers. Your husband may still receive non-medical care from an Ebenezer caregiver, from a few hours a day up to 24-hour live-in care.

  • What happens before a family caregiver starts?

We complete the application for services and confirm the client meets eligibility requirements, including Medicaid. Then we get the caregiver credentialed. Once that's done, the caregiver begins receiving a weekly tax-free stipend.

  • Can widows of veterans get care?

Yes. Our Veterans Care Services extend to surviving spouses of veterans who may qualify. They receive the same non-medical help with daily living and companionship that veterans do.

  • Can I take a break from caregiving?

Yes. Respite care lets family caregivers step away while their loved one keeps receiving attention. It is available on a short-term or ongoing basis.
