Home Care in Plainfield, CT Built Around Family

At Ebenezer AFL, we believe in the power of family. For Plainfield households, that belief takes a practical form: a relative who lives with an aging parent can become that parent's paid caregiver. For seniors without a family caregiver at home, our own caregivers provide non-medical help with daily life. You can start either path with a free consultation.

Family Caregiving That Pays

Through Adult Family Living in Connecticut, a family member, friend, or trusted individual can be paid to care for a loved one who needs daily help. The person receiving care chooses their caregiver. Spouses can't fill the paid role.

Two sets of requirements apply.

**For the caregiver:**

  • 18 or older
  • Legally allowed to work in the United States
  • Capable of providing care
  • Living in the same home as the client

**For the client:**

  • Generally 65 or older
  • Has or qualifies for Medicaid
  • Needs daily hands-on care and supervision
  • Lives in a safe, suitable home

When both sides qualify, Ebenezer takes the application for services off your hands. We guide you through eligibility and get the caregiver credentialed. The caregiver is then paid a weekly tax-free stipend.

Clients under 65 should ask about the PCA Waiver. A loved one who may be eligible for Medicaid but isn't enrolled can get our help applying.

In-Home Help Without a Family Caregiver

Not every senior has a relative available to move in or stay home. Ebenezer caregivers fill that gap with non-medical home care, scheduled anywhere from a few hours a day to 24-hour live-in care. They help with:

  • Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and getting around the house
  • Meal preparation and medication reminders
  • Laundry, dishwashing, and light housekeeping
  • Trips to and from appointments
  • Companionship, and dementia and Alzheimer's support

Before the first visit, we put together a care plan based on the client's routines, concerns, and goals. As conditions change, the plan changes with them. Each client is matched with a compatible caregiver for continuity.

For Veterans, Spouses, and Surviving Spouses

Our Veterans Care Services give honorably discharged veterans non-medical help with bathing, dressing, grooming, meals, and mobility. Spouses and surviving spouses of veterans who may qualify receive the same care. Staff familiar with Aid and Attendance and related programs can explain how home care fits with VA services. On request, they help document care needs for benefit paperwork.

Support for the Caregiver, Too

Caring for someone you love takes a lot out of you. Family caregivers in our program get personalized coaching, helpful resources, emotional support, training, and oversight. Respite care is available short-term or on an ongoing basis, so you can rest or handle other commitments while your loved one is looked after. For practical ideas, read our guide on how to avoid caregiver burnout.

Every Ebenezer caregiver is carefully screened and background checked. Caregivers are CPR and First Aid certified where applicable, and trained in hands-on care, safety, and specialized care needs.

Plainfield and Eastern Connecticut

Our offices are in Stratford and Shelton, and we serve families across Connecticut. In the eastern part of the state, that includes Plainfield along with Killingly, Canterbury, and Sterling. Spanish-speaking families can work with us in Spanish: hablamos Español. Visit the Ebenezer AFL home page to learn more about our programs.

Answers for Plainfield Families

  • Is the AFL caregiver stipend taxed?

No. Caregivers in Adult Family Living receive a weekly tax-free stipend for the care they provide.

  • Does the family caregiver have to live with the client?

Yes. Under AFL, the caregiver and client must live in the same household. A relative who lives elsewhere may not qualify as the paid caregiver. The client can still receive care from an Ebenezer caregiver.

  • What if my parent doesn't have Medicaid?

Medicaid is required for Adult Family Living. If your parent may be eligible but isn't enrolled, contact us and we will help with the Medicaid enrollment process before applying for AFL.

  • Do you provide medical care?

No. Ebenezer provides non-medical home care only. That covers personal care, meals, medication reminders, housekeeping, companionship, and escorts to appointments.

  • How do I find out if we qualify?

Fill out the eligibility form on our website or call (475) 559-7418. The consultation is free, and we will review both the client's and the caregiver's eligibility with you.
